April 2026

Welcome to the April edition of My Romance Writers, your monthly source for marketing strategies and tools.

Reader Survey Results

Throughout Indie Author Month, we’ve been surveying our readers to find out exactly what they are looking for from indie authors. We’ve received thousands of responses, and there are some fascinating insights for anyone looking to grow their fanbase.

The biggest takeaway? Most of our readers don’t just stick to one lane. On average, each reader selected 3 – 5 different tropes and romance categories, showing a massive appetite for variety.

1. Top Tropes & Growing Niches

While certain tropes see high volume, most of our readers are “genre-crossers” who love to mix the popular tropes with different settings:

  • Bad Boy (61.8%) and Billionaire (53.6%) romance are currently the top categories for attracting new clicks
  • Small Town (50.2%) and Dark Romance (49.6%) continue to be essential staples for our audience
  • But don’t forget the niche advantage… Because our readers have such broad tastes, authors in specialized categories have a unique edge. You aren’t competing for a tiny slice of the pie; you are capturing a dedicated reader who is looking for your specific “flavor” (like Historical, Paranormal, or Romantasy).

2. Settings: The Loyal vs. The Broad

Contemporary remains the dominant setting (over 50%), but the 34% of readers who prefer Historical, Paranormal, and Romantasy are some of our most loyal fans. These readers are often looking for binge-worthy content (a big advantage if you write series or box sets).

3. The “Spicy” Sweet Spot

Transparency is the fastest way to get your book into the right hands. While 86.2% of our surveyed readers look for Steamy or Explicit titles, accurate labeling is the real key to conversion. Many readers who enjoy high-heat books also reach for Sweet & Clean or Mild stories now and again as “palette cleansers.”

Interested in selling in Europe?

You’ve already done the hard work of writing your book—now it’s time to find more readers. While the US is crowded, Europe’s 450M readers offer a massive opportunity to hit the Amazon Top 100 with lower ad spend and fewer reviews.

With that in mind, In the next few weeks I’ll be hosting a free workshop looking at:

  • How to launch and rank in Europe and South America.
  • How to find the right keywords and genres for specific countries.
  • Which types of books do best in which countries
  • How to translate without breaking the bank
  • How to launch on marketplaces beyond Amazon.

I’m even finalizing a special guest speaker from Poland to help you tap into that growing market!
