Cate Lane on Italian romance, billionaires, and falling for your best friend.
What was the specific idea or “what if” moment behind His Vow?
The idea for His Vow came during a family trip to the Amalfi Coast. Italy. With its coastline, atmosphere, and romance, it felt like the perfect backdrop for a love story, and the setting helped shape the book from there.
If your main characters went on a Valentine’s date in the real world, where would they go?
The Isle of Capri, Italy — somewhere romantic, beautiful, and a little glamorous.
His Vow combines loyalty, protection, and high emotional tension. What draws you to those themes?
Those elements feel very natural in this kind of story. A marriage of convenience may begin as a contract, but once vows are involved, the lines blur. Loyalty and protection become central, especially when two people who already share a bond are forced into something more permanent. Watching that practical arrangement evolve into genuine love is part of what makes the journey satisfying.
What are the top 3 tropes readers will find in this story? (And which one was the most fun to write?)
Readers will find Billionaires, Marriage of Convenience, and Best Friends to Lovers.
Best friends to lovers was the most fun to write. There’s something special about exploring how a friendship shifts into something deeper.
What is the one thing you hope readers feel when they finish your book?
Like they’ve visited a group of friends, and that they’d like to return to that world in book two!
What is one “must-have” for you to get into the writing zone?
Just some alone time. It can be hard to find some days, but that quiet space makes all the difference.
